Sakura Japanese Restaurant – Sushi, Heart, and History

At RLTW Land Clearing, we’re all about supporting the hardworking folks who make our community feel like home. Today, we want to shine a light on a hidden gem that’s not just our favorite sushi spot—it’s a place full of heart, history, and some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet: Sakura Japanese Restaurant in Columbia, South Carolina.

Sakura serves up some of the freshest, most flavorful sushi around. Whether you’re a seasoned sushi lover or just getting into Japanese cuisine, this place delivers—every time.

A Sushi Experience That Feels Like Family

We had lunch at Sakura today, and once again, it was outstanding. But as much as we love the food (and we really do), it’s the people who make this place special.

The owners are always welcoming and go out of their way to make sure everyone feels at home. We had the pleasure of talking with their sushi chef during our visit, and it was the highlight of our meal. Believe it or not, he’s 75 years old and has been making sushi for most of his life—and you can tell. His passion, precision, and joyful spirit make dining at Sakura a true experience.

While the sushi is what keeps us coming back, Sakura offers more than just rolls. Their menu includes a full range of traditional Japanese dishes. We haven’t tried the full lineup yet—but based on how good the sushi is, we’re sure the rest of the menu is worth exploring!

A Story of Resilience and Dedication

Before settling into their current Columbia location, Sakura was located elsewhere in the city. Unfortunately, like many others, their business was hit hard during the thousand-year flood. Their original restaurant was destroyed.

But rather than give up, the owners started over—and rebuilt Sakura in its current home, where they’ve continued to serve the community with heart and excellence ever since. That kind of resilience and dedication is what small business is all about.

Why We Keep Coming Back

From creative specialty rolls to fresh sashimi and perfectly balanced sauces, everything on the sushi menu is top-notch. But more than that, it’s the kindness, consistency, and community feel that keep us coming back. It’s no exaggeration when we say: Sakura is our favorite sushi spot—period.

Be sure to check out their Facebook page and their Instagram for a look at their delicious dishes and to stay up to date on hours or specials.
